🎉 Carnival in Cusco: a celebration full of joy and tradition
Carnival in Cusco is one of the most fun and colorful festivals of the year. It takes place between February and March and blends ancient Andean traditions with modern customs, creating a unique experience for both locals and visitors. During this time, the city’s atmosphere changes completely. The streets are filled with music, dancing, water and foam games, and a festive energy that can be felt in every corner. It is a celebration where joy, togetherness, and tradition take center stage.

💦 Water and foam games
One of the most characteristic traditions of the Cusco Carnival is playing with water. Children, teenagers, and adults take part by throwing water balloons at each other or using foam. Although it may seem like just a bit of fun, this practice symbolizes purification and renewal.

🌸 Yunza or Carnival Tree
Another very important tradition is the yunza, also known as “corta monte.” It involves a tree decorated with gifts, streamers, and balloons. People dance around the tree while taking turns chopping at it with an axe. Whoever manages to knock it down will be in charge of organizing the yunza the following year.
🎶 Traditional music and dance
During Carnival, different neighborhoods and communities organize parades featuring traditional dances, colorful costumes, and marching bands. Each group showcases a part of its cultural identity, making the celebration even richer and more diverse.
🍲 Traditional Carnival Food
Food is also a central part of this festival. One of the most traditional dishes is puchero or timpu, made with meat, vegetables, and Andean ingredients.
